Hydraulic Hybrids

This is from my buddy Jake and since he's done all the work, I'll copy his email verbatim.

"So I guess this is a few months old now, but I just read about it the other day at the doc's office:

Basically the hydraulic hybrid setup is slowly being adopted and tested on UPS trucks (just 7 planned for '09/10), which is a perfect market/test-bed for it. They get about 45-50% increase in fuel economy and 30% decrease in emissions. Plus all the trucks are centrally maintained so the data can be monitored closely.

Good stuff. Anything Brown does the other big carriers will do also, especially if it cuts cost.

Perfect example of treehugging capitalism, right? We're gonna need a lot more of this. Some folks believe we're entering a post-industrial age of scarcity (scarcity of oil, water, land, etc.) that will force us to adapt to a less wasteful economic model if we want to maintain our standard of living. My thing is, even if resources aren't scarce, why would we want to spend extra money on gas and electricity by using inefficient vehicles and homes? Money is one thing that will always be scarce (unless you're that idiot on Wall Street that spent $10 million on renovating his office after his company received taxpayer bailout money).

Jake, if you're reading this, thanks for the good information. Keep it coming. Become a contributor if you want. God know we're all strapped for time.

Hey Mike, good points. It's always interesting to me how delicate the balance can seem between the concern of natural resources vs. monetary resources. Gas prices being a prime example; when they're up, the drive for better efficiency is multiplied, pulling the concern of our limited natural resources behind it. This of course is a great thing for our progress towards limited usage, but when the prices drop, it tends to take the focus on efficiency down a notch as well.

Strapped for time is right. Great site by the way.
