From the OPEC story, one silver lining of the recession (not to say I want it to continue) is that "oil stockpiles are building rapidly from China to the U.S. Gulf Coast as the global economic slowdown continues to eat away at demand."
That sucks though b/c the oversupply has lowered the price of oil, thus making that dirty fuel from hell extremely competitive once again. But, the price will head back up soon enough and we'll be stuck with a stagnant economy and expensive fuel. If only we had invested in homegrown, clean energy way back when. Maybe the odd couple of Obama and T. Boone Pickens will save us from total catastrophe.
I read the article about FlatPak homes and toured Flatpak's website (flatpakhouse.com). Really cool stuff. A bit pricey, as a 1000 sq foot home would run between $200,000 and $300,000 not including the land and site prep fees.
Mike, where is the industry at in providing green modular homes for the masses (in the $100K ball park range for U.S.)?
You can get a modular home for that price from many companies, but they're going to look like mobile homes unfortunately. However, Palm Harbor and other companies are developing really attractive bungalows that are smaller, more efficient, and cheaper. Our architect, Tony Lucas, is a master of making modulars looks great. I'll be doing an interview with him for the blog pretty soon.
